Allergies are one of the most common health problems affecting millions of Americans of all ages. Some allergy problems - such as a mild case of hayfever - may require only occasional treatment. Others, may interfere significantly with day to day activities and even in some cases be potentially life-threatening. Over-the-counter medication may have undesirable side effects. In these instances, individuals should seek the care of a physician to help them manage their symptoms.
What is an allergy?
Normally the body’s immune system is designed to fend off harmful invaders such as viruses and bacteria. Sometimes, the body mistakenly identifies harmless pollens, dust mites, foods and other substances as potentially harmful and develops a host of complex defenses against these substances. Unfortunately, the body’s reactions against these substances can result in unplesant and even dangerous symptoms in those prone to allergic reactions.
